Shellac v Gel v Acrylic Manicured Nails

Submitted by Kirsty on

Hi everyone,

I have had numerous calls of late regarding acrylic nails and acrylic damage. I thought I would put together a quick blog with my thoughts on the above three treatments, having had them all on my nails over the years.

Shellac
The nicest most natural coverage I have ever worked with. When applied correctly, it leaves a flawless, high shine finish that lasts over 14 days, chip and lift free! There is no evasive prep to the nail and it can be removed in a matter of minutes by either me or the client...WITHOUT damage or buffing. In my opinion, this is the way forward for nail care.

Gel
I have worked with gel for about 5 years before I started my shellac manicures. I also wore gels for around the same amount of time. In that time I didn't notice any damage to my natural nail and the procedure that I used to apply the gel, was non evasive, just like shellac. If a customer is after tips, which I no longer offer, I will always tell them to go to an approved salon and have gel extensions. These look far more natural than the clumpy acrylic option.

Acrylic
Its a massive no no for me and I can't be persuaded otherwise. Ironically, its not the acrylic coverage on the nail that causes the extensive damage that I see on a regular basis. It is in fact THE DRILLING!! Why they need to drill on a natural nail is beyond me. This alone cause's a multitude of problems from infections, flaking and weak nails and nasty ridges that sadly never go. If a drill is used on your nail then I am afraid your natural nail will undergo massive trauma. Its just like bleaching your hair every two weeks...eventually, it WILL fall out!

So, in short. Natural nails will always be at their healthiest, in my opinion, with shellac manicures. Whilst women continue to choose the sturdiness of acrylic, I will always be expected to work wonders and help these poor nails recover.

Until next time
Kirsty
